Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will launch a digital currency on Monday aimed at improving the payments system in the West African country, according to the central bank.

The Central Bank of Nigeria said in an emailed statement on Saturday that the eNaira digital currency system, which has taken several years to develop, will make financial transactions easier and smooth for all strata of society.

The digital currency will complement the actual (traditional fiat) naira.

According to the statement of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the digital currency “eNaira” aims to make financial transactions easier and smooth for all classes of society.

Previously, the launch date was scheduled for October 1 to October 4, but it was postponed in respect of the 61st anniversary of Nigeria’s independence on October 1, so the date was set for October 25 (i.e. tomorrow) as the date for the launch of the new digital currency.
